10 escape Broadway house fire
12-17-2009
Ten people escaped their burning home early this morning after a present ignited their Christmas tree.

Winchester firefighters were called to 230 E. Broadway shortly before 4 a.m. today. The occupants, three adults and seven children, were all outside when the first fire trucks arrived on the scene.

Winchester Fire-EMS arson investigator Maj. Greg Beam said the fire was traced to an electrical outlet near the Christmas tree. The occupants said there had been problems with the outlet overheating previously, and there was a present lying against the outlet, Beam said. Once the present ignited, the fire spread to the Christmas tree and the couch in the home.

Smoke detectors in the home woke the children upstairs and the adults downstairs. No one was injured in the blaze.

The fire was contained to the living room, though the rest of the first floor received heat and water damage. The upper floor received smoke damage, Beam said.

It was the second house fire in as many mornings for the city Fire Department. Wednesday morning, firefighters fought a fire at 8 Madison Ave., which was likely caused by a space heater near a bed. James Hawkins, 75, was sleeping when a neighbor noticed the fire and called 911. Hawkins was taken to the hospital to be checked after firefighters carried him from his home.

Firefighters pull elderly man from burning downtown home 12-16-2009
A space heater may be to blame for a house fire that endangered the life of a 75-year-old man early this morning.

Winchester firefighters were called to 8 Madison Ave. shortly before 6 a.m. when neighbors saw flames inside a bedroom window.

“A neighbor was getting ready to go to work and heard a popping sound,” Winchester Fire-EMS Maj. Greg Beam said. When the neighbor saw flames inside a window, he called 911 and started banging on the windows to wake up James Hawkins.

Firefighters rescued Hawkins from his burning bedroom, and he was talking to firefighters outside his home, Beam said. Hawkins was transported to Clark Regional Medical Center to be examined, Beam said, but Beam had not received an update as of press time.

Investigators have ruled out suspicious causes in the fire and are focusing on a space heater, which was next to the bed, Beam said.

“There’s nothing suspicious,” he said. “It started in the bedroom and it was contained to the bedroom.”

The house itself received little damage, Beam said, but the bedroom was gutted.
